Why we chose DPC Zanzibar for our latest kite trip

An exclusive interview with guests Sandra & Mauro

To escape the winter in Switzerland and to soak up some warmth, Sandra and Mauro decided to travel to Zanzibar, an island in the Indian Ocean located about 35 kilometers off the coast of Tanzania. Passionate about kiteboarding and wing foiling, they spent a few weeks at the Duotone Pro Center zanzibar. The center is based in Kiwengwa on the east coast of the Spice Island, as Zanzibar is often called. Find out why the DPC was their first choice in the following interview:

Sandra and Mauro, what is special for you about the spot in front of the Duotone Pro Center Zanzibar? Why did you choose it over other spots on the island?

The first thing you notice is the warm turquoise water and the white beach with super fine sand. In addition, the Duotone Pro Center Zanzibar spot stood out for its uninterrupted fun even at low tide - even for foiling - due to its deep water channels next to the sandbanks. A rarity on Zanzibar as we discovered while exploring other spots like Paje, perhaps the most well-known spot on Zanzibar among kitesurfers. Another advantage we noticed: Kiwengwa is still an insider tip. We found plenty of space in front of the center which we shared with only a few other kitesurfers or wingfoilers.

As you mentioned the tides and temperature, what can new guests expect?
The tides are pretty intense and change in 6 hour patterns. But, as mentioned, with the deep water channels you will always find some water close to the school. And keep in mind that the average annual water temperature is 27 degrees - now in February it is 29 degrees. No wetsuit needed.

For what level is the spot?
The lagoon offers perfect conditions for beginners and intermediates with a combination of shallow and deep water, whether you are wingfoiling or kitesurfing. Sure, the beach can get a little narrow and the water a little choppy at high tide, but most of the time it is pretty flat thanks to the outer reef.

What are the wind conditions and seasons like?
There are two prevailing trade winds with constant (side) onshore winds averaging around 15 knots: The "Kaskazi", from the northeast between December and March, and the "Kusi", from the southeast between July and September.

What does that mean in terms of equipment? What sizes of kites and wings should one bring?

Due to rather light winds, we recommend bringing the larger items in your collection. However, if you prefer to travel light, follow our approach: bring your harness and if anything more, your favorite gear, and supplement it with some of the top-of-the-line Duotone and ION rental equipment available at the center.

What else does the Duotone Pro Center in Zanzibar offer?
The center caters to all your needs with ample gear storage, lessons for all skill levels, lockers, toilets, showers, and a beach restaurant with sun beds, chairs and tables next to the center. It is called The Beach Lounge - oh how we loved their freshly made salami pizza and avocado salad between our sessions on the water...

Any tips on where to stay and where to dine?
We highly recommend the Mvuvi Boutique Resort, which is attached to the center and where we felt very welcome. With its nine rooms, it has a family atmosphere. It is a short walk on the beach, perhaps 100 meters, to the watersports center. Another advantage: Free storage of your equipment is included in your stay. We also enjoyed the Mediterranean-Swahili fusion cuisine at the restaurant and the spa massages.

How did you get to the Duotone Pro Center Zanzibar?
There are many airlines with flights to Zanzibar. Once you land at Zanzibar airport, it is a one hour drive to the Duotone Pro Center Zanzibar and it is easy to arrange a taxi. During the transfer we already got a glimpse of the scenery and the tropical charm of the island with its lush vegetation.

Good that you mention the vegetation - what else can you see and do in Zanzibar? Is it also a spot for non-water sports enthusiasts or kids?
Yes, absolutely. The island has a lot to offer and has a beautiful green vegetation. We started with the classic spice farm and Stone Town tour. When you are on "Spice Island", you cannot miss it, right? It was surprisingly interesting to discover how spices are grown, including not only the famous ones from Zanzibar like cloves, nutmeg, pepper and cinnamon. Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a unique place where African, Indian, Arabic and European cultures meet. Another fun activity is to experience a cruise on a traditional local sailboat and discover colorful starfish. There are also places with caves or where you can go snorkeling and diving or places where you can see dolphins, turtles and monkeys. Also, if you have time, we highly recommend combining your stay with a safari on the beautiful mainland of Tanzania - everyone we met who went on a safari loved it.

"Zanzibar is a paradise on the water and also offers a variety of exciting experiences on land. It is well worth a visit."
